Art as an Investment: HUGE ROI
The best way to invest your bonus this year is to buy something pretty–specifically art from artists with prices that have great potential to increase. When Wall St boys hop on the art investment train you know it’s an undeniable opportunity for investment. Hop on the train they have–with platforms such as Artemundi, YieldStreet and Masterworks allowing the general public to invest in fractional art ownership through small shares in blue chip artwork.
While fractional art ownership is a fascinating concept and will undeniably impact the art world in unforeseen ways for years to come…Sometimes you want ROI andddd something pretty for your investment. For those of us that love eye candy, here is a list of 18 artists that make art that’s a perfect way to spend your bonus this year.
Introduction to Artists Worth Investing
This list includes new and emerging artists that are great investments in 2023 and 2024 as well as artists whose historical significance is being appreciated with a less patriarchal evaluation of art history. We’ve found women artists and historically underrepresented minority artists that are climbing in value as the world appreciates their historical significance, beauty and whimsy. We’ve divided the list into the very technical categories of ‘abstract-y’ and ‘less abstract-y’.
When investing in art, you should choose what you love. But, in the case of many loved pieces, the website artsy has a helpful tool to determine which piece is the best investment. On each artists page it shows you auction results and whether they were higher or lower than expected. Additionally, you can add your collection to your profile on the artsy website and it provides insights on your personal collection.
Abstract-y Artists to Invest In for 2023 & 2024
Abstract art provides an opportunity to see the unique and innovative qualities of artists operating with freedom outside the bounds of a genres rulebook. Each piece is the visual representation of the embodiment of an emotion, moment, or concept.
Violeta Maya
Just burst on the NY scene with Artsy’s subway campaign. Art value nearly doubled since then and has prestigious fellowships and shows worldwide. Invest now before she skyrockets. Ethereal and organic, Mayas work elevates any space while bringing a sense of calm.

Francois Bonnel
Emerging painter from Toulouse, France that has great musical inspiration tied to many pieces. Tennis pieces.

Yayoi Kusama
Museum exhibit swept the nation as an instagram phenomenon. Limited edition pumpkins.
Damien Hirst
Controversial artist with collections of dots etc that are on the affordable side and likely to increase in price. I’m partial to the dots.
Xie Lei
Haunting and increasing in value
Stik
Fun, viral London artist that manages to convey emotion through mouthless ‘stik’ figures.
Loie Hollowell
Loie Hollowell resale prices increased dramatically last year.
Less Abstract-y Artists to Invest In for 2023 & 2024

Hunt Slonem
Iconic and yet affordable for now. With ‘huntopia’ he will be the next Jeff Koons with iconic bunnies and butterflies.
David Shrigley
Cheeky. Cheery. Conveys Emotion.

Kehinde Wiley
Kehinde Wiley hit the pop culture radar big with the 2018 unveiling of Barack Obama. The portrait featured Obama in a more casual pose with a lush green background–a huge departure from the standard stiff presidential portrait.
Amy Sherald
Amy Sherald joined Kehinde Wiley on the pop culture scene with a smashing portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama. While Sherald and Wiley’s portraits of the first couple have been touring museums around the United States, Sherald has continued producing intimate portraits that stop the viewer in their tracks. Originally from Columbus, GA, Sherald is now in the New York City area “document[ing] the African American experience in the United States.” You Amy Sherald’s works at the link here.
Mel Bochner
The ‘Blah Blah Blah’s are iconic. I love the synonyms too. You can find Mel Bochner’s work here.
David Hockney
The pools are iconic. He has another wonderful series featuring Yosemite. His mother served as a muse for more than 20 pieces of work. It’s wonderful to see the evolution of these works in both style and emotions captured. Interestingly, Hockney has recently produced digital works on an ipad. Several of the digital works are of plants in the home and are wonderful for anywhere in the home.
