Constipation, the dreaded enemy of smooth sailing in the digestive department, can rear its ugly head for various reasons. From dietary changes and hormonal fluctuations to medications and stress, it’s a common foe that disrupts our lives and leaves us feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. But fear not, fellow warriors against waste! This post is your battle cry, equipped with strategies and product recommendations to slay the constipation dragon and peacefully reclaim your digestive throne.

Understanding the Enemy:
Before we dive into negotiation tactics, let’s understand our adversary. GLP-1’s act by suppressing gastric emptying. This has a lot of wonderful impacts on my body…but one of the undesired side effects was constipation.
Constipation occurs when stool moves through the digestive system too slowly, resulting in difficult, infrequent bowel movements. The stool becomes harder and drier, making it even more challenging to pass. Symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, and straining during bowel movements are unwelcome signs that the dragon has taken hold.
Being on Mounjarno is a continual process of negotiating how your body reacts to each dose and each day. Here are the five things that helped my body negotiate it’s way out of constipation.
The Five Pillars of Defeating Constipation:
- Gentle Laxatives: & Stool Softeners Dietary fiber is important…but Mounjaro constipation required more than figs, kale and beans for me. I found gentle laxatives and stool softeners were very helpful when paired with water.
- Hydrate Like a Hero: This brings us to water. Water is your trusty sidekick in this battle. Any laxative is assisted with water since tbey pull water into the digestive tract. Insufficient water intake can dry out stool, making it harder to pass. Think of water as the lubricant that keeps your digestive machinery running smoothly.
- Simple Strolls: Exercise gets your gut gurgling in the best way possible–Gurgling, really?, ew…sorry y’all the thesaurus isn’t that helpful for constipation articles :0)– Physical activity stimulates intestinal contractions, propelling food through your system. I found even brief walks outside were helpful. I’m talking 10-20 minutes, easy breezy strolls helped tremendously.
- Yoga Binding Positions: These help with gas. I wouldn’t do these around, like, my office crush…but in my living room? Super great for momentary relief and often seemed to help the larger process of moving things along.
- Need Piles of Help: If constipation is so bad that you get piles (hemorrhoids for my USA friends) with itching or pain cocoa butter suppositories, Dermoplast and Tylenol saved many a day during the adjustment period.
Product Power-Ups:
While lifestyle changes are the ultimate weapons in your arsenal, sometimes additional reinforcements are needed. Here are five product recommendations to consider, always in consultation with your doctor:
- Senna: This herbal laxative stimulates the colon and promotes bowel movements. Use it sparingly and only as directed, as it can cause dependence if overused. Sennacot and Senokot are common brands.
- Psyllium Husk: This natural fiber supplement bulks up stool and promotes regularity. It comes in convenient powder or capsule form. Brands like Metamucil and Citrucel are popular options.
- Magnesium Citrate: This mineral acts as a laxative by drawing water into the intestines, softening stool and facilitating easier passage. Brands like Natural Calm and Mag Citrate are readily available.
- Probiotics: These friendly bacteria support gut health and may improve digestion and reduce constipation. Brands like Culturelle and Align offer probiotic supplements.
- Stool Softeners: These medications soften stool, making it easier to pass. Docusate and Colace are well-known brands. Remember, these are for occasional use and not long-term solutions.
- Laxatives: Miralax, ducolax
- Enemas: These saved the day when nothing else would. Even the cheap ones from Walmart were great.
Remember:
- Consult your doctor before taking any new supplements or medications, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
- Gradually introduce any new products to your routine to avoid side effects.
- Don’t rely solely on products. Lifestyle changes are crucial for long-term relief.
- Listen to your body and adjust your approach based on your individual needs.
The Takeaway:
Constipation may be a common foe, but with the right weapons and strategies, you can conquer it and reclaim your digestive throne. Remember, a healthy diet, adequate hydration, regular exercise, stress management, and, if needed, the right product reinforcements are your keys to victory. So, march forth, brave warriors of the gut, and let loose the dragon within (the good kind, of course)!
