GLP-1 medications, often used for obesity treatment, inflammation, addiction and diabetes, can be a powerful tool for many. However, like any medication, they can come with side effects. Understanding these common side effects can help you manage your journey effectively.

Generic Compound vs Branded Prescription Side Effects: After18 months on the branded prescription I switched to a compound prescription. I switched because my $25 coupon ran out, we switched insurance, and there was a shortage. What I personally found, was that the side effects around injection day were much less. Perhaps this is because the compound drugs are less potent? But, I have been able to lose and maintain on the compound drugs, so I can’t say they have been less effective for me. Now, I also had been exposed to the prescription for 18 months when I switched, so perhaps it was also my body adjusting to the formula and I would have had less side effects if I continued on the branded prescription too. But I wanted to highlight this because I have also heard other people have the same experience. If you’re having severe side effects on the branded prescription it might be worth discussing switching to a compound from a reputable tested pharmacy with your doctor.
1. Gastrointestinal Upsets:
- Nausea and Vomiting: This is one of the most common side effects, often occurring in the initial weeks of treatment. It usually subsides over time. But there’s no reason to be miserable. Doctors often prescribe Zofran in conjunction with Zepbound.
- Diarrhea: Some individuals may experience loose stools or diarrhea. This can be managed by staying hydrated and adjusting your diet. Please, please talk to your doctor about this.
- Constipation: In some cases, constipation can occur. Increasing probiotics intake and staying hydrated can help alleviate this. Here’s a BLOG POST on how I beat constipation.
2. Feeling Off:
- Fatigue: Feeling tired or sluggish is possible, especially during the initial adjustment period. This was my biggest side effect during my first two months. It felt kind of like the first trimester of pregnancy for me. I found electrolytes, water, rest, and protein helpful.
- Dizziness: Some people may experience dizziness, particularly when standing up quickly.
- Headaches: Mild headaches can occur in some individuals.
3. Taste Changes:
- Metallic Taste: A metallic taste in your mouth might be experienced, but it usually subsides over time. I experienced this briefly, but it also coincided with a Covid infection, so it’s a toss up on caused what.
4. Injection Site Reactions:
- Redness, Swelling, or Pain: These are common at the injection site. The Tiktoks say switching injection sites can help minimize discomfort. I never experienced these and have only ever injected in my stomach and use alcohol wipes prior to injection. Definitely talk to your doctor about this.
5. Other Potential Side Effects:
- Pancreatitis: While rare, pancreatitis is a serious side effect. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever. I did not experience this. Obviously, it is crucial to see a medical professional and contact your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
Tips for Managing Side Effects:
- Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help alleviate some side effects like constipation and nausea.
- Protein Shakes: Protein shakes have been an integral part of my 2-year journey. Drinking them means I get a certain amount of vitamins and proteins everyday. It helps if I’m feeling a little naush, or really, just as a busy mom running out the door for carpool. I like Premier Protein chocolate flavor the best.
- Eat a balanced diet: Choose foods that are easy to digest and avoid excessive amounts of foods that constipate.
- Listen to your body: If you experience any concerning side effects, talk to your doctor. I can’t emphasize this enough! Talk to your doctor. They have medical solutions to side effects. They have insight into what other options might work better for you. Your body is individual to you and my solutions won’t necessarily work for you.
- Consider lifestyle changes: Regular exercise and stress management can also help improve overall well-being. Honestly, I haven’t done much exercise. There is a certain amount of feeling like I’m cheating taking a Zepbound prescription. Admitting my exercise has been minimal even though I have a 140-pound weight loss over two years, adds to this feeling because in the past I was a person that required hours of cardio and weights to even maintain my weight. The only consistent exercise I’ve done in the past two years has been walks, with occasional bursts of Peloton enthusiasm. Instead of feeling guilty, I have embraced that this medicine is treating a medical condition and it reduces inflammation and the impact of the medicine in my life and on my individual body means that I no longer require hours of exercise to lose or maintain weight. That, for me, is pretty great.
Remember, these side effects are common, and many people experience them to varying degrees. By understanding these potential challenges, you can be better prepared to manage your GLP-1 journey and reap the benefits of this medication.
